Common Themes in Examiner Feedback

Across recent examination sessions, examiners have frequently praised students for:

Musicality & Interpretation

  • Expressive performances, dynamic shaping, stylistic awareness across a wide range of repertoire, character, phrasing and storytelling.

Technical Development

  • Secure technique, fluent playing, rhythmic control, articulation and confident technical work.

Musicianship

  • Strong reading skills, listening skills, ensemble awareness and musical understanding.

Tone, Balance & Sound Quality

  • Tone production, balance, voicing, tonal control and clarity of melodic lines.

These comments reflect an emphasis on developing well-rounded musicianship, combining secure technical foundations with musical understanding, stylistic awareness and confident performance.

A Broader View of Progress

Whilst examination results provide a useful measure of achievement, they represent only one aspect of a student's musical development. Alongside examination preparation, students are encouraged to develop confidence, musical understanding and the skills needed for independent music-making and long-term enjoyment of music.
