About Nathan

Nathan Bird is a music teacher and Director of Music at St Augustine's Church, Rumney, Cardiff. He teaches piano, organ, singing and music theory to children, teenagers and adults, from complete beginners through to advanced students and performance diploma candidates.

Nathan studied music at Cardiff University, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2014. Whilst at university he studied the organ with Robert Court and performed with a number of ensembles, including the Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra and Cardiff University Symphony Chorus. In 2016 he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specialising in secondary music education.
Following the completion of his PGCE, Nathan worked in secondary education before moving into full-time private music tuition in 2018. Since then he has taught students of all ages and abilities, helping them develop secure technical foundations, musical understanding and confidence in performance. Students have successfully completed practical and theory examinations under his guidance across a wide range of grades and disciplines.
Nathan has been active as a musician in South Wales since 2012. Prior to his appointment at St Augustine's Church in 2015, he served as organist at Christ Church, Pant (Merthyr Tydfil), and was Musical Director of The Tydfil Singers. At St Augustine's he oversees the musical life of the church, directs the choir, and established a successful choristership scheme for young people in 2017. In 2021 he oversaw the installation of the church's new three-manual digital organ.
Nathan is a member of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM). In 2024 he was awarded the Archbishop of Wales Award for Church Music in recognition of his significant contribution to church music.
